The Dreamforce Handbook: A Simple, All Embracing Treatment for Savvy Attendees

photo of a Dreamforce attendee taking notes

Dreamforce remains among the largest Tech conferences in the world. Each year, almost 200,000 partners, customers, and prospects all descend on San Francisco for the Dreamforce Extravaganza.

This year, Dreamforce promises to be bigger, better and far more memorable than ever before. From exceptional speakers with thousands of keynotes and breakout sessions to the wildest parties of the year; there’s always something happening.

But even with so much going on at Dreamforce, it’s easy to lose track of time and get so little done. We already drew up a Dreamforce Guide to help you maneuver the mega event and know what to expect. But when it comes to Dreamforce, there’s no such thing as TMI. That’s why Veloxy’s crafted this simple but helpful handbook for the savvy attendee to get everything done comfortably and post haste.

Dreamforce Boot Camp

Our handbook starts off three days before Dreamforce. Most people will be busy with accommodation and sightseeing. However, Saleforce offers in depth training tracks for attendees who want to fast track their learning. This boot camp runs for three days going up to Dreamforce. This year (2019) the Boot camp is from November 16th through 18th with courses like System Architect, Administrator, Coding, and Platform Development among others. To fast track your learning, it’s definitely worth checking out the Salesforce Boot Camp.

Hotels and Accommodation at Dreamforce

After successfully registering for Dreamforce, you can now make a reservation for where you’ll be staying. You’ve got to remember that it’s also close to the December holidays. As such, hotels in California are extremely expensive. What more, those in San Francisco are in short supply and get fully booked within days.

If you’re staying within the campus, there are lots of benefits. You get to start your day early and attend events till late in the evening without stressing over transportation. Likewise, Dreamforce shuttles make it even more convenient because they drop attendees from the hotels to the campus and even Dreamfest.

Can’t get a hotel at Dreamforce? Not to worry, Airbnb is always a great option since there are some close to Dreamforce. If you’re looking for something more affordable, there are plenty of hostels in the downtown area with independent rooms.

Getting Around at Dreamforce

We’ve already mentioned Dreamforce shuttle buses that move around the campus ferrying people to various destinations. However, most of the venues are within 15 minutes’ walk from each other. As such, it might be faster to walk at times than wait for the shuttle. If you’re planning to drive yourself downtown, it’s worth noting that parking is a tad expensive. It’s often cheaper and more convenient to use an Uber or other cab services.

Main Keynote

Out of all the keynotes at Dreamforce, the main one is always something to look forward to. At the first day of the event (Nov 19), we’ll have the main keynote. It’s going to be held by co-CEOs Mark Benioff and Keith Block alongside some very important clients. The goal is to welcome and energize new attendees, share the latest trends and present new features and products from Salesforce.

As you would expect, there are extremely long queues to get into the main Keynote room. Last year, you needed to queue an hour in advance just to get a seat in the main room. Fortunately, the Keynote is shown live on big screens and many other large rooms across the campus. It might just be more convenient to view it in literally any other location, especially if you’re late.

Other Types of Sessions to Catch Include:

1: Product and Industry Keynotes

These include each of the brands main products i.e. Sales Cloud. There’s also Platform and Developer keynotes. Partner and Admin keynotes are walk in sessions that don’t require prior registration.

2: Hands on Workshop (HOW)

As the name suggests, attendees are provided with hands on experience on Salesforce features and products. This involves being assigned a trial Org and instructors to help you execute Trailhead modules.

3: Breakout Sessions

These are sessions provided by Salesforce partners, employees and customers on a technical topic. But remember, breakout doesn’t mean walk in – you still have to register for the sessions.

Post Dreamforce

After each day or session, it’s important to make a summary of the key things you’ve learnt as well as action items for future reference. On the very last day, consolidate all of them into a clear image plan. It’s no secret that attending Dreamforce is expensive. As such, it’s crucial to share the knowledge with colleagues and follow up to get the best ROI.

Rare Tips and Cheats for a Successful Dreamforce

1: Our first tip might not be so rare, but it’s worth mentioning nonetheless. It’s extremely important to identify specific goals in advance. Obviously, these will depend on your carrier, roles and responsibilities. For instance, administrators could really benefit from learning how to integrate Salesforce with Outlook by plugging Veloxy

2: Keep your schedule light. Filling up your agenda might seem like a great idea, but burnout is real. Leave some time for networking, meeting with friends, and having fun.

3: It’s November – San Francisco is very chilly this time of year. So make sure to layer up and dress warm.

4: When planning your Dreamforce sessions at different venues, make sure you consider the time it take to get from one location to the next. Even 15 minute delays between four sessions means one collective hour spent moving.

5: Dreamforce veterans advise wearing comfortable shoes. The campus is quite large and you will definitely end up walking extensively. So take care of your feet to avoid aches and fatigue.

6: Leave laptops and other materials at hotels unless you need them for a presentation. Lugging loads around all day can be tough on your back.
